Last night, as part of the new director / new film festival in New York. I had the pleasure of seeing the much discussed film from last year Attenberg. Presented at the MOMA by director Athina Rachel Tsangari.
Attenberg seems to deal with it’s pacing much like Dogtooth did (interestingly enough, Athina was one of the producers of that movie). But where Dogtooth (for me at least) failed to make an emotional impact, this film finds it’s footing and despite a slow start, definitely sucks you in eventually, as you warm to the mimicking games and quirks of it’s central characters.
The story centers around a 23 year old girl (played by the beautiful Ariane Labed) who obsessed with the documentaries of Sir David Attenborough (she pronounces it “Attenberg”) is coming to terms with her sexual self, learning from her best friend (of which the award for most awkward kiss must surely be deserved to) and an engineer she begins an amazingly cringe-worthy yet sweet relationship with, all whilst her father is slowly dying in a hospital.
It’s probably one of the most refreshing (and surprisingly funniest) coming of age films i’ve seen in a long time, so if it pops up in a cinema near you, I strongly suggest you go and see it.
